January 31, 2010-Day 31

One month completed!

I went to Bryant Park today to try to get some pictures of ice skaters, but they have already torn the rink down.  Don't they know it is still winter?  They should have figured it out from the ice cycles hanging off of the fountain in the park.  This is the shot that I submitted to my 365 group on Flickr.

And here is a picture of the entire fountain.

Took this Saturday night. My husband and I enjoyed some wine and watched a movie.

I see the flash reflecting in the glass, which is annoying me. I am really bad at photo-editing, but I just order photoshop elements, so maybe I will become better.

Full Moon, originally uploaded by Ms. Baboo.

It is a beautiful full moon tonight. I was rushing trying to take this since it is about 20F out right now. I don't have anything larger than a 55-250mm lens. Maybe I will rent a larger one to try to take this again. That is, when it is warmer out.

We were having the weirdest weather tonight. It was beautiful and sunny behind us, but very dark ahead. The spots on the mirror are actually snowflakes.

I'm not feeling well today. I've been taking it easy, watching bad t.v., and having soup and ginger ale for lunch.

It was a terrible day today in NYC. The wind was actually worse than the rain. I saw the corpses of massacred umbrellas everywhere I went today.

Goodbye Christmas, originally uploaded by Ms. Baboo.

We finally got around to taking down our Christmas tree today. We only put special ornaments on our tree; nothing generic. Here are some of the ornaments as I packed them away.

Corks, originally uploaded by Ms. Baboo.

I've been looking for some things around my house to take pictures of. I've been collecting corks in a vase for a project (to be decided), although I actually think they look kind of nice just sitting in the vase.

I've heard that most people that try to do a 365 project only last 3 weeks, which I passed yesterday. Of course, in order to continue all year, some of my pictures are going to be mundane. So, here's a picture of one of my bookshelves.

January 16, 2010-Day 16

It is a beautiful day, so I decided to walk around my neighborhood with my new 50mm 1.4 lens.  Since it has such a wide aperture (1.4-the smaller the number, the wider the aperture), it will allow me to get a very shallow depth of field in my pictures. Basically, this means only a little bit will be in focus and the rest will be blurred, which is called "bokeh" in photography talk.

Update to January 2, 2010-Day 2

If you are curious about how the picture of my hand from day 2 was used, go to http://davidandtracie.com/2010/01/04/the-give-anissa-a-hand-project/ to see the video.  Tracie did a beautiful  job putting it together.

January 15, 2010-Day 15

Here is a picture I took tonight of the sun setting over New York Harbor from a moving car on the Brooklyn Bridge.  The only editing I did was cropping out the steel of the bridge and straightening the horizon.

Here is the original:

In other photography news, I got my first invite to submit a picture to a Flickr group.  It seems like it may be a religious group. They may have misinterpreted the irony of the picture of the cross from January 13th or maybe they think I need some help because they told me that they would pray for me, but I don't care.  I'm still flattered.

January 13, 2010-Day 13

Sorry for the late post. We got home late last night because we went to see "Wishful Drinking," Carrie Fisher's autobiographical one woman show. It is excellent. If you have a chance, see it.

While in the theatre district, I saw this. Do you remember it from the beginning of old Saturday Night Live episodes? It is really creepy in real life.

January 13, 2010

If you are having trouble reading it, it says, "SIN WILL FIND YOU OUT." As I said, creepy.

Please ignore all the noise in the photo. I needed to up the ISO to 1600 to have it properly exposed.

January 12, 2010-Day 12

Today was a very long day for me. I went to work very early and came home late. I knew that I didn't have much time to take pictures, so I didn't bother bringing my DSLR with me today. Here are a couple of pictures that I took with my Canon Powershot. (It has manual settings. If I haven't already explained, I am trying to take all of my pictures in manual.)

Here are a couple of pictures I took on my way to work.

January 11, 2010-Day 11

Today is my mom's birthday, so my dad cooked a fabulous meal. My father is not a frequent cook (to say the least), so I have no idea how he became such an amazing cook. He made fried green tomatoes and salad as an appetizer. (It was a 4 course meal.) Here are some pictures of the fried green tomatoes being made.

Here are some more pictures of my niece from this morning. She has proclaimed that she is not a morning person. Here is a picture of her relaxing and watching some cartoons when she first woke up.

But since she is 8, she wakes up quickly. I wish I had 1/4 of her energy. Here she is jumping on the bed.

January 9, 2010-Day 9

I know I am little late putting up yesterday's pictures, but I spent the night at my parents'. I am not great with portraits, but my wonderful niece who lives 4 hours away came to visit, so I had a beautiful model to practice on. I took over 600 pictures in just 2 days! Here's just a couple.

Since we don't get to see my niece that often, we get to spoil her a little when we do. Here's a picture of her eating a very decadent ice cream sundae.

Yum

Uh, oh, brain freeze.

January 5, 2010-Day 5-Williamsburg

I drove through Williamsburg, Brooklyn on my way to work today. Williamsburg is interesting because it is a mix of upper-middle class and downtrodden areas. It also has a real mix of people who have been there for generations and new people who have moved into the area.

January 4, 2010-Day 4

Tangerine, originally uploaded by Ms. Baboo.

It's only Day 4 and I am already struggling a bit to keep up with this project. Today is the first day that I had to take a photo on a work day, and, honestly, I found it to be a little bit difficult. I don't have much time during the day, and it is dark when I leave work. But unless I win the lottery, I have a lot more work days that I need to do this, so I guess I will just have to be creative.

Anyway, this is a picture I took for one of the scavenger hunts that I participate in on Flickr. This covers "squeeze" and "tangerine." I know that the tangerine is blurry, but I am posting it because I like the way the drop looks coming off of it. Besides, this is a learning process and this blog is supposed to show my improvement. If all my pictures were great, there would be no point, right? The one below is technically better, but I don't think as interesting.

January 3, 2010-Day 3-At the grocery store

At the grocery store, originally uploaded by Ms. Baboo.

While I usually love to take photos of beautiful scenery, it is freezing here in NYC and I don't want to spend any time outdoors. So this weather is forcing me to take more pictures inside. I took my camera with me to the grocery store today, and while I got some strange looks from other shoppers, I think I got some decent shots. I took these with my kit lens. I am hoping to get a nifty-fifty later in 2010, so I would love to try to take these pictures again with a lower aperture.
